Author's notes are a way of adding information, separate from the story, into a work of fiction.

In My Immortal, Tara abuses author's notes many times. She usually starts an author's note with the letters "AN:" or "an:".

When she uses them at the beginning of a chapter, she frequently thanks Raven for her help, calls reviewers who flame "prepz" and tells them to stop (often denying that Ebony is a Mary Sue or threatening to stop writing the story if she doesn't get a certain number (most often five) of good reviews), and discusses her favorite bands. She also occasionally warns readers that she will be too busy to update the story, most often because she's on vacation.

When she uses a mid-chapter author's note, it is usually to clarify information or to point out a joke, often with "geddit". She often uses parenthesis, and it can sometimes be difficult to tell if it is part of the story or not.

The Anonymous Troll Author also uses author's notes.

In I'm Not Okay and Ghost of You, Raven uses author's notes as well.
