"Ebony. Thou must kill Vampire Potter!"
―Voldemort, executing his master plan.

Voldemort, also known as Tom Satan Bombodil or Tom Andorson in his youth, is the main antagonist of My Immortal. He spends the entire story trying to execute his master plan: having Ebony kill Harry "Vampire" Potter.

Background

In his youth, during the '80s, Voldemort was named Tom Satan Bombodil and attended Hogwarts, being a member of Slytherin House. Tom was a die hard goff who was a fan of a goffic band called XBlakXTearX, which consisted of James "Samaro" Potter on guitar, Serious "Hades" Blak on drums, Lucian Malfoy on ”teh gutter”, and Serverus Snap on "boss". He, along with the other goffs, were frequently oppressed by Albert Dumblydore, who yelled at or even punished every display of goffikness.

Somewhere during his past, Tom Satan Bombodil suffered from a "borken hearth"; probably because his relation with Hedwig ended. This caused him to become the “Bark” Lord Voldemort. His conversion to Voldemort made him lose all his goffikness, causing him to become very preppy. It seems that this loss of goffikness also negatively impacted his looks, as he turned from a hot goff guy to being an ugly preppy man with no nose.

Somewhere between him becoming the “Dork Lord” and the fanfic proper, he gained an irrational hatred of Harry "Vampire" Potter, wanting to see the boy dead at all costs. His hatred for Vampire is never explained, as a past between them is never alluded to. During this time, Volfemort founded da Death Deelers; a preppy organization bent on destroying Vampire. He also killed Hermione's real mother for no apparent reason, which is actually the only murder he is said to have committed in My Immortal.

Role in the story

Present day

Voldemort first appears in Chapter 9, where he tries to force Ebony into kill Vampire Potter with a gun. He threatens her, saying that if she refuses, he will kill Draco. During this confrontation, it's clear that Ebony outmatches him big time in terms of power. It is at this point that he is described as an ugly, preppy man with no nose and no nose, who dresses all in black but is obviously not goffik. For some reason, he speaks faux-Early Modern English, threatening to Enoby, "If thou does not, then I shall kill thy beloved Draco!" Voldemort also does not seem to realize that killing Vampire himself would be much faster.

In Chapter 12, it is revealed by Vampire Potter that Volfemort kidnapped Draco (or “has him bondage”, as Tara puts it). Enoby and Vampire break into Voldemprt's lair and kill Snaketail, his personal assistant. Voldemort hears the commotion and starts walking towards them on, for some reason, his high heels. Ebony and Vampire save Draco and flee before Voldemort finds them.

Voldemort later appears in Chapters 16 and 17, where he hijacks two MCR concerts that Ebony attends. During these hijackings, he and his Death Deelers disguise themselves as Gerard Way and the rest of MCR, only to reveal their true identities after playing music for a while. Here, he tries again to intimidate Ebony into killing Vampire. However, during his second concert hijacking, Albert Dumblydore turns into gothic and chases Vlodemort away.

In his next appearance, Volzemort tries a more brutal approach: he flies into the Great Hall of Hogwarts, dressed as Darth Valer, and directly threatens Ebony in Dumblydore's presence. Sadly, he does not realize that Vampire is right in front of him, very easily killable, and just flies away.

Ebony's time travel plot

Ebony later travels back in time to the 1980s to prevent Voldemint from becoming evil, by trying to seduce him into loving her. The theory behind this is that if Volxemort does not get his "hearth borken",[1] he will not become evil. Due to his past self, Tom Satan Bombodil, being a goff, he and Ebony get along really well. She also succeeds in getting a date with him, in addition to her becoming lead singer of the goffic band XBlakXTearX.

When Ebony reunites him with his ex Hedwig, Tom and Hedwig start to make out in the Great Hall (and filmed at that!). Here they are caught by Dumbledore and Mr. Norris. After being brought to Dumbledore's office, Ebony sees Morty McFli's blak tim machine and decides to jump into it.

Final confrontation

She takes Tom Satan Bombodil to the present, where he transforms into his later self, Voldemort. Here he teams up with Snap and Loopin to finally take matters into his own hands and kill Vampire, and all the other goffs, himself. Ebony decides to do something and shoots Voldimort with an Abra Kedabra curse. Voldrimort's fate is left ambiguous, since this is where the entire fic ends.

Alternate "troll" ending

In the ending written by An-Anon-Author-Who-Will-Silently-Not-Reveal-Her-Identity-Because-She's-A-Coward, Voldemort's fate is different.

After Ebony is shot by James in chapter 38, she inexplicably reappears in the future. She dies a dramatic death, but her death actually releases Tara's grip on the Harry Potter universe. This makes Voldemort come to his senses, reverting him to his canon self, after which he starts to duel Harry Potter. The fic ends with the forces of good and evil having a huge battle.

Appearance

Voldemort is described as a "man with red eyes and no nose and everything".[2] He is established as very evil and preppy, but also wears black clothes, making him a poser. However, in the 1980s he is a goff and has "long blak hair, kinda like Mikey Way only black. He had gren eyes like Billie Joe Amstrung and pale whit skin",[3] as well as a "six-pak justr lik Gerard Way!11".[4]

Personality

Voldemort is very determined in following his plans to kill Vampire Potter, to the point he does not see common sense. If, for example, Vampire Potter is right in front of him, he still tries to make Ebony kill him, despite being capable of doing so himself. He also speaks in (bad) Shakespearean English in the present - though he speaks normally in 1980. He seems to have very eccentric quirks, like using high heels[2] and randomly threatening to kill God ("Allah Kedavra", "Let God be destroyed").

Voldemort also has a tendency to impersonate Gerard Way and hijack My Chemical Romance concerts in order to attack Ebony. He accomplishes this by wearing a mask. During this time, Voldemort is also shown to know the lyrics to several MCR songs as he sings “Helena and sum odder songs” while impersonating Gerard Way. In fact, Voldemort’s performances are so good, that even Ebony cannot tell the difference between Voldemort and the real Gerard Way until Voldemort reveals himself by taking off his mask.

Voldemort seems to have a fear for Albert Dumblydore. This is shown when Dumblydore drove him off by simply shooting a spell at him. He doesn't even attempt to fight back. Another display of this fear is during the final chapter, in which he looks away from Dumblydore when the principal arrives at the scene. This probably stems from Dumblydore's dictatorial reign at Hogwarts, during Volzemort's youth.

His past self, Tom Satan Bombodil, does not have the evil tendencies the present Voldemort has. Instead, he is a goff and likes a goth band called XBlakXTearX. He is also very smitten with Ebony and wants her to be his girlfriend.

Abilities

Voldemort appears to be the third most powerful wizard alive, only outmatched Ebony and Albert Dumblydore. Even Albert Dumblydore, who is explicitly stated to be the only one Voldemort fears, begs Ebony to defeat him. This implies Voldemort is evenly matched to Dumblydore, with Ebony being the only one to stand a chance defeating him. However, he doesn't seem to actually display any impressive magical abilities, being easily driven off when a newly Goffic Dumblydore shot a spell at him. Voldemort does have other talents that would seem slightly useful.

  • Telekinesis: Voldemort is gifted in the art of Telekinesis, which allows him to read the minds of his victims. He used this against Enoby to discover she loves Draco. While telepathy should be the right term for this ability, Volxemort explicitly calls it by this name.
  • Shapeshifting: During one confrontation with Ebony, Vlodemort transformed himself into Darth Valer. Why he thinks taking the form of a Sith Lord would be more effective against Ebony is anyone's guess. However, the form does instill fear in Ebony and friends. It is possible, however, that he was simply referred to as Darth Valer, rather than shapeshifting. Additionally, he could have simply been wearing a Darth Valer costume.
  • Musical talent: Voldemprt is a very talented musician, as he is able to perfectly play MCR songs without Ebony, who is a diehard MCR fan, even noticing a thing. This talent likely comes from his youth as Tom Satan Bombodil, in which he played in his own band.
  • Imitation: As mentioned above, Vlodemort can imitate people flawlessly, as evident in how he managed to imitate Gerard Way.
  • Foresight: During younger years, Tom Satan Bombodil knew what would happen in the future. He knew, for example, Hogsment would be renamed Hogsmede.

Possessions

  • Satan's car: During his Hogwarts years, Tom Satan Bombodil owned a regular non-flying car. After becoming the Dork Lord Vlodemort, he is never seen using it.
  • A broomstick: Voldemort is described as frequently flying on a broomstick when threatening Ebony.
  • Multiple guns: Voldemort owned several guns throughout My Immortal. He gave his first gun to Ebony, ordering her to kill Harry ''Vampire'' Potter with it. She ironically used it against his Death Deelers rather than the intended target. During his final confrontation with Enopby and friends, he is described to take out another gun, implying he has more than one.
  • A Gerard Way mask: He disguised himself as Gerard Way in order to ambush Enoby at a MCR concert. This mask is so convincing, not even the biggest MCR fan can notice the difference.
  • A Gutter: During his days as Tom Satan Bombodil, he played gutter in his goffic band.

Differences from the original

The original Voldemort is a megalomaniacal psychopathic villain who goes to great lengths to get what he wants—even if this means killing his own henchmen. He started two major wars in Britain with his followers and is so feared that even his name itself is a source of dread. Even as a child he is established to be sadistic and beyond saving. He also sought to become immortal. Voldemort is also said to be one of the most powerful wizards ever, and certainly the most powerful dark wizard of all time.

The Voldemort of My Immortal is none of that. The only thing he does is intimidate Ebony and then flee. While he does share the obsession of killing Harry Potter with his original counterpart, he does not have the intelligence to create effective plans, only sticking with an ineffective one: despite being very loosely based on one of the most powerful wizards ever, despite having LOADS of opportunities in the story to kill Vampire himself, he instead keeps using the one same plan over and over again: FORCE EBONY TO SHOOT HIM WITH A GUN. It can also be said that his obsession with killing Harry Potter is about the only trait he shares with his original counterpart, despite Ebony being explicitly designated as the only one able to defeat Voldemort. If he would have a slight semblance to the original, Voldemort would probably go after Ebony, as Voldemort's obsession stemmed from the fact that Harry could potentially be a threat to Voldemort's life.

As a teen, he is established as a sympathetic goff and happens to live in the 1980s instead of the canonical 1940s. The original teenaged Riddle was a manipulative, sadistic and power hungry student, who, more or less, was the leader of a gang of cruel bullies, while managing to keep the outward appearance of an innocent, likable and gifted student. Therefore, he was adored by many of the teachers, excluding Dumbledore. Tom Satan Bombodil, on the other hand, is yet another depressed "goffik" teen, who is obsessed with "goffik" music and sex, especially doin' it in all manners of inappropriate places, such as a cinema and the Great Hall.

Physically, the My Immortal Voldemort does not differ much from his canon counterpart, with Tara using the film incarnation, as played by Ralph Fiennes, as her primary inspiration. She even explicitly states he looks "basically like Voldemort in the movie." However, it should be noted that the real Voldemort never actually wore heels as he did in My Immortal.

Voldemort's great magical powers, which was one of his most defining traits, are largely absent in My Immortal, as he is easily defeated by both Ebony and Albert Dumblydore on two separate occasions. In fact, he barely has any of his magical powers. For example, in canon, he can fly without the need for a broomstick, while in My Immortal, he is frequently mentioned to fly on broomsticks. It is stated that Voldemort "hath telekinesis" in My Immortal. Even though he supposedly has this power, he inexplicably never uses it. In this case, it is very likely that Tara mixed up telekinesis and telepathy, which is indeed a power Voldemort has in the original Potter series.

In My Immortal, Voldemort is also shown to be able to see into the future, knowing, in his youth as Tom Satan Bombadil, that Hogsment and Hot Ishoo would be renamed as Hogsmede and Hot Topic respectively. Needless to say, the original Voldemort wasn't known for his divining powers, as he spends an entire book trying to get his hands on a recording of a prophecy made by an actual seer.

A milder difference is that the original Voldemort thought of Muggles as nothing more than animals, to be used and killed as such. In contrast, My Immortal Voldemort is clearly a big enough fan of My Chemical Romance that he is able to perform their songs so well that even hardcore fans like Ebony can't tell the difference until he pulls off his mask.[5]

Another bizarre difference is that the My Immortal Voldemort, in his adult years, always speaks in a faux old English accent, incorrectly using second person referrals such as "thou". Obviously, being born in the 20th century, the original Voldemort speaks modern English, with the only peculiarity being that he sometimes refers himself to third person as "Lord Voldemort".

Despite that the desire to kill Vampire/Harry is similar, it seems unlikely that Volsemort actually attacked Vampire as an infant, as neither Voldemprt's vanquishing or resurrection is ever mentioned, though Vampire is stated to still have his characteristic scar.

Trivia

  • The gothic shopkeeper in Hogsmeade is named "Tom Rid", and later called Tom Riddle—this was Voldemort's real name, which in full (Tom Marvolo Riddle) can be rearranged to "I am Lord Voldemort". However, in this story, Tom Rid has no apparent connection to Voldemort, past or present.
  • Tom Bombadil is a mysterious character appearing briefly in J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. The same name is used as Voldemort's given name in My Immortal. The original Bombadil is nothing like Bombadil in '80s Hogwarts, but then again none of the Harry Potter characters are really themselves either. Considering that Bombadil never appears in any of the LOTR movies, this is sometimes used as indication that Tara is a troll—after all, she claims to have not read all of the Harry Potter books and is basing her fic off the movies, yet references a character that only appeared in a novel, and otherwise never references The Lord of the Rings or indicates she is a fan. Though given that Raven appears to have read the books, it is possible that Tara heard of him from her.
  • It is unclear where "Tom Anderson" originates from. Speculated origins include Thomas A. Anderson/Neo, protagonist of The Matrix franchise; Thomas Anderson, co-founder of Myspace; and Thomas T. Anderson, tritagonist of Beavis and Butthead.
  • Voldemort is, at least once, referred to as "The Dork Lord" in My Immortal. The Dork Lord was Lord Valuemart's official title in the parody series Barry Trotter, written by Michael Gerber five years prior to My Immortal. This is unlikely to be a deliberate reference by Tara however, and is almost certainly just the result of no proof-reading or a deliberate typo.
  • It is possible that the past Voldemont, Tom "Satan" Bombodil, is actually the present Voldemprt in disguise; he is somehow able to predict the future, and when he travels to the present in Chapter Forty-Four, he turns into Voldemort; if they were the same person all along, that could explain both things..
  • When described as "Darth Valer", Voldemort is described as having a "raspy voice". This implies that a deliberate attempt to point out this mispelling was made, which is sometimes used as evidence that Tara is a troll.
